With 6.7% of all Scottish jobs tied into the creative industries and a growth rate projected in excess of 10% annually, it is clear that the creative industries is a core strategy of future Scottish economic growth. A newly available study reveals exactly how significant the creative industries is in the Highlands & Islands.
An earlier report in 2003 from the University of Glasgow tabbed the Highlands & Islands as Scotland's fastest growing region in creative industries. But the new consultancy report commissioned by Highlands & Islands Enterprise also show that amongst all the key emerging industries, the creative industries boasts of the second highest average wages. The £27,000 annual salary averaged by creative industries professionals in the Highlands & Islands was second only to the £36,000 reported by health professionals. It was comfortably ahead of ICT (£25,000) and renewable energies (£20,000)
In addition; relative to the general population; creative industries professionals are more likely to be educated to at least degree level (40% vs. 33%), more likely to be female(71% vs. 48%), tend to be more export focused (85% vs. 51%), and significantly more likely to be new migrants to the region (40% vs. 27%).
