Red Road, the feature film debut of Oscar-winning short film maker Andrea Arnold, won the Cannes Jury prize at its world premiere in the last weekend of May.
Critics raved about the movie, describing it as "powerful, moving and strong". The film, shot in Glasgow, sees Dickie play a CCTV operator called Jackie who one day spots a man on her monitor who was responsible for her father's death and feels compelled to confront him.
Shot on a modest £1.3m budget, Red Road is the first of the trilogy, which are all being shot in Glasgow. The attention Arnold has received since winning an Oscar for her short film Wasp and the hoopla of Cannes left her feeling a little bemused.
She said: "It's all a bit bewildering but the Oscar undoubtedly helped me get funding to make this film. As for Cannes, I feel like I am here but not here. I am confused but thrilled as well.''
Red Road is not the first Scottish film to win plaudits at Cannes. In 2002 the screening of Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen kick-started the career of Martin Compston.
