Visual Narrative - Theory to Practice Workshop
Two four hour workshops with Sam Firth
6pm to 10pm at Fired Art, Fort William
Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January
Learn how to apply the tools of narrative to develop your own and other peoples screenplays to make them more entertaining and engaging. This is a more in depth and hands on course following Sam Firth’s last highly successful visual narrative taster course held in Fort William during October.
Practical exercises, group discussions, and film analysis will be used to ensure that participants gain a thorough understanding of the tools of visual story telling and narrative structure. Participants will also learn how to use genre as a narrative tool, and access their creativity.
Sam will give an overview of script development and script editing and some tips on how to do it well before participants are asked to give feedback on each others work.
Participants will be asked to bring a ten minute example of their own work or a new idea for a ten minute project (this can be in treatment, or verbal pitch form) this will then be developed to the next stage using the narrative tools given in the last workshop and group feedback.
We will also analyse two films in depth going through them sequence by sequence and looking at visual story telling techniques, narrative structure, the protagonists external goal and inner need, the themes and the dramatic question of the film.
We will also look at the interplay between main plot and subplot.
Participants will be asked to have watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Whistle Down the Wind before attending the workshops.
Sam Firth has taught screenwriting a university level and in Eastern Europe. She has trained with Arista, North by North West, and The Script Factory. She has an MA in Screenwriting from the Northern Film School.
Please note you will still be welcome if you did not make the last workshop as there will be a re-cap on everything covered.
This course will be charged at £25 and includes a meal on both evenings. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout the evening.
